Local clubs in Northern Ireland

Welcome back to my blog, today I will be discussing the local clubs in Northern Ireland with a focus on my own club Lurgan Rugby club and what they have to offer the public and members. When people think about rugby, they often focus on what happens during the 80 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. The tackles, tries and physical battles are usually what grab the headlines. However, for thousands of people across Northern Ireland, local rugby clubs are about much more than results on a scoreboard. They are places where communities come together, friendships are built and people of all ages can enjoy being part of something bigger than themselves. As a member of Lurgan Rugby Club, I have seen first-hand how important local rugby clubs are to the communities they serve. Like many clubs across Northern Ireland, Lurgan is much more than a place to play rugby. It is a social hub, a place to stay active and a welcoming environment where everyone can find a role, whether they are a player, c...

Health and wellbeing in Grassroots rugby

Welcome back to my blog, today we will be discussing the physiological benefits and mental health benefits in rugby. Some stereotypes of rugby often include that you need to be physical and fitness comes second but from the highest level of rugby to grassroots level you need to have enough energy in the tank for 80minutes n matter your role and position on the field. At grassroots level, this challenge can be even greater. Many players are balancing rugby alongside full-time jobs, university studies, family commitments and other responsibilities. Training sessions often take place after a long day at work or education, meaning players must find ways to look after themselves both on and off the pitch. Rugby is no longer just about turning up on a Saturday afternoon and giving everything for eighty minutes. It is about preparing your body and mind throughout the week to perform at your best. Health and wellbeing play a huge role in this preparation. Regular training helps improve cardiov...

Social aspects and enjoying Rugby

There are many social aspects to rugby both on and off the pitch.  One of the things that makes grassroots rugby so special is the sense of belonging it creates. Local clubs are often at the heart of their communities, bringing together people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences through a shared love of the game. Whether it's parents helping on match days, volunteers organising events, or supporters cheering from the sidelines, everyone has a role to play. The friendships built through rugby often extend far beyond training and matches, creating a strong support network and a welcoming environment where people feel valued and connected. This is increasingly important especially in senior rugby clubs when you are leaving school as it allows you to make long lasting friendships after school boy rugby while enjoying the sport you love. Teamwork is at the core of everything rugby stands for. On the pitch, players learn to trust one another, communicate clearly, and work tog...

Welcome to my blog on Grassroots Rugby Northern Ireland

Im Alex and I have played rugby all through my school years and a year now of my adult life. I am starting this blog as a part of my digital analytics module but also because the subject is important to me, some people may have certain questions around rugby due to being on the fence whether they want to commit their time and effort to a sport. Hopefully this blog will show you all what rugby has to offer at any level and particularly the grassroots social level of rugby. While also showing the evolution of rugby over the years to the game we know and love today. Rugby is a sport stereotyped as rough and very physical, which it is but many people don't appreciate how the sport has evolved into the modern day rugby. The sport now is a lot more technical when it comes to coaching and a lot safer in terms of the contact with rules being changed constantly followed by all levels of rugby. The constant evolution of rugby and the rules of the game has always got the players wellbeing as...
